25th June and 17th September 2016
Central London (with online participation possible, please enquire)
The DfE has required examination boards to specify the systematic study of a religion alongside the Philosophy of Religion and Religious Ethics for all GCE A Level courses taught from September 2016. Many schools face teaching Christianity in a new way and at a level which they have not approached it before, without training or adequate resources.
This intensive one-day CPD event, led by Dr Peter Vardy and Charlotte Vardy, addresses the need for training to support delivery of the Christianity elements of the new A Level specifications and will provide teachers with a focused subject-knowledge top-up, editable scheme of work and range of teaching resources—as well as the opportunity to ask questions, receive support and make professional contacts– all helping to ensure that A Level teaching is effective and students continue to be as enthusiastic about Religious Studies as they have been in recent years.
Sessions will include…
Þ Exploring the Nature of God (includes Feminist perspectives on God)
Þ Teaching about Jesus (includes Liberation Theology and Prosperity Theology)
Þ Wisdom and Authority (Considering the use and abuse of the Bible, textual criticism & interpretation)
Þ Communicating the Central Principles of Christian Ethics (with some application to Civil Disobedience, War and Gender issues)
Þ Approaches to Planning and Resourcing the new A Level Religious Studies
Dr Peter Vardy was Vice Principal of Heythrop College, the specialist Philosophy and Theology College of the University of London from 1999-2011 and is the author of some 15 popular books including “The Puzzle of God”, “The Puzzle of Ethics”, “The Puzzle of the Gospels” and “Good and Bad Religion”. His books, training events and student conferences have been credited with kick-starting the growth in A Level Religious Studies which we have enjoyed for the past 15 years.
Charlotte Vardy is a practicing Head of Department who has been working on the new specifications intensively since the DfE launched their core content in November 2015 and who has been attending the board training sessions religiously! She is co-author with Peter of “Ethics Matters”, “God Matters” and “Bible Matters” for SCM Press and Author of Life and Death Coursebook for PushMe Press.
The cost of this event – which is on a Saturday to avoid schools having to pay for supply cover – is £199, including lunch and refreshments. If schools book 3 or more places, this can be discounted to £149 per place. If schools book a place on both A Level and GCSE CPD events, the combined price can be discounted to £299.
