Preparing to teach Christianity for the new GCSE Religious Studies

18th June and 24th September 2016

.

Central London (with online participation possible, please enquire)

The DfE has required examination boards to specify the systematic study of two religions alongside the more familiar themes in Philosophy of Religion and Religious Ethics for all GCSE courses taught from September 2016.  The vast majority of schools are choosing Christianity as one of their two religions but although it might seem like a “safe” and “familiar” option, on closer inspection the new specifications will ask us to teach about Christian beliefs, teachings and practices in a way that is quite unfamiliar to many teachers—specialist or not.

.

This intensive one-day event will support teachers in preparing to teach Christianity (not the Roman Catholic Christianity option) for the new specifications – and will provide a generous range of resources including an editable scheme of work, student resources and as a bonus, a full student textbook covering the Beliefs, Teachings and Practices of Islam, designed for the new specifications in relation to the core content which is common to all boards.

.

Sessions will be led by Dr Peter Vardy, who has been credited with kick-starting the growth in A Level Religious Studies which we have enjoyed for the past 15 years, and by Charlotte Vardy, a practicing Head of Department who has been working on the new specifications intensively since the DfE launched their core content in November 2015 and who has been attending the board training sessions religiously!  The focus will be on developing teacher subject knowledge, which research suggests is the most significant factor affecting student attainment, but a range of teaching strategies will be suggested and discussed. Sessions will include…

Hosting Our Events

Please contact us if you would like to host one of our brand new student events to support the 2016 GCSE RS specifications…

.

  • We are looking for schools with halls/theatres/chapels/gyms with AV facilities, accommodating at least 300 visiting students, at least 1 hour’s drive from other GCSE venues.
  • The room must have adequate toilet facilities, access to drinking water and a space for students to eat their packed lunch (could be the back of the hall, a foyer or a courtyard).
  • There must be adequate parking and/or public transport access to the school
  • Host schools receive a discount of £5 per ticket for their students, making their tickets just £10 each.  It is impossible to offer any free places at these events because margins are very low and without the support of schools, they simply cannot happen.
  • We take care of publicity (although we like schools to help with drumming up support in their area through local networks etc.)  We also take and process all bookings.  Many departments (& senior management teams) see a great publicity opportunity, getting local papers in to cover the story etc.
  • We pay the going rate for staff refreshments at break-time and lunch-time, which can be arranged through your caterer or provided by an external catering company if that is better.
  • We have been running similar events with partner schools and colleges all over the country since 2010; please look at our GCSE RS page for details and testimonials.
