There is no denying that the new GCSE specifications have had a significant, negative impact on the number of students choosing Religious Studies at both GCSE and A Level.
Experience has borne out many teachers’ worst fears about the effect the sheer volume of content has on opportunities to discuss, debate and really engage with ideas. While those students who still choose A Level RS are better prepared for the rigours of the new A Level specifications… those students are rare, sometimes to the extent that the subject is no longer viable at 16+ and numbers studying the subject in the sixth form fell by 40% in 2018.
So, what can we teachers do to stem the decline and save the subject we love?
Suitable for all teachers of GCSE Religious Studies, “GCSE Religious Studies: A New Approach” will:
● bring teachers together to network and discuss the challenge posed by the new GCSE specifications, providing a rare opportunity to collaborate and share experiences across all exam-boards, options and settings.
● propose an exciting solution to the problems posed by the new GCSE specifications. Using the most popular AQA A content and assessment strategy – but dispensing with the structural straightjacket forced on all the boards by the DfE and OfQual – experienced teacher Charlotte Vardy has developed an inspiring, academically stretching scheme of work that has re-enthused her own mixed-ability students and has increased interest in A Level.
● provide inspiring training on tackling the most conceptually difficult core GCSE topics, God as Trinity and the Sanctity of Life OR on managing an RS department through a time of change.
All refreshments and a range of digital resources will be provided to all delegates.
“GCSE Religious Studies: A New Approach” costs £175 per place, including refreshments and a range of digital resources.
